Red Flags – Week 4
The Red Flag of God Not Being in First Place
The biggest red flag is when anyone or anything takes God’s place in your life.
An Idol is anything that takes priority over God in your heart and mind.
Why are idols red flags?
1. Idols Will Disappoint You
17 But those who trust in idols, who say, ‘You are our gods,’ will be turned away in shame. These prized objects are really worthless Isaiah 42:17
2. Idols Will Control You
You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 1 Corinthians 12:2
3. Idols Will Change You
5 They worshiped worthless things and became worthless themselves.
Jeremiah 2:5
Common Modern-Day Idols:
- Social Media & Approval
- Career & Success
- Comfort & Convenience
- People’s Opinions
What’s competing for God’s place in your life?
25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.
Romans 1:25
Worship is giving God your highest love and loyalty.
When God is not in first place we attempt:
- To limit God’s location
- To reduce God’s power
- To control God
Why should you put God first?
1. You will be fulfilled
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” Psalm 37:4
As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.
Romans 10:11
2. It will set you free
If the Son sets you free, you are truly free. John 8:36
3. It will transform you
The Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. 2 Corinthians 3:18
