Always – Week 1

Big Idea

From Genesis to Jesus, you’ve always been on God’s mind.

HOW GOD RESCUES US

1. He Initiates the Rescue

God’s first response to sin is to come after us.

6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. Genesis 3:6-7

And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife. Genesis 3:21

2. He Arrives as the Rescuer

Christmas is Jesus stepping into the story.

6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! Luke 2:6-11

3. He Invites Us to Receive the Rescue

God offers rescue, but we respond

“Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.

41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.

Acts 2:36 and 41

Next Steps

  1. Receive the rescue personally.
  2. Respond publicly.
  3. Invite someone into the story.
