Unfinished Business – Week 1

You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.  Colossians 2:13-14

Why we have unfinished business with God:

  1. We BURY it.

When I refused to confess my sin,my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Psalm 32:3-5

Ways we bury it:

– We minimize

– We rationalize

– We compromise

  1. We BLAME others.

The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.  Genesis 3:12

  1. We BEAT ourselves up.

My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear.I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. Psalm 38:4, 6

How to receive God’s forgiveness:

  1. Admit it

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.  1 John 1:8

  1. Accept responsibility

For I recognize my rebellion. Psalm 51:3

  1. Ask for God’s forgiveness

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

1 John 1:9

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.Romans 3:23
