Unexpected Entrances

Online Notes

12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” John 12:12-13

14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:15  “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” John 12:14-15

16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. John 12:16-17

18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”  John 12:18-19

3 perspectives

Perspective #1 The crowd their perspective – what’s in it for me?

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” John 12:13

Result – My tendency is to be self-centered, lead to deception

Perspective #2  Religious leaders their perspective -I’m in control

Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone[a] has gone after him!” John 12:19

Result – my desire for control creates an unteachable heart

Perspective # 3 The disciples their perspective – Not like this

From then on Jesus Began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. Matthew 16:21

He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead. But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. ‘Heaven forbid, Lord,’ he said. ‘This will never happen to you! Matthew 16:22

Result – My lack of trust in God’s plan produces blindness

What happens when Jesus enters your life our Situation

  •  Jesus creates a beautiful disruption

  •  Jesus brings a new perspective

“His disciples didn’t understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him.”  John 12:16
